What's Up: So, You Think You've Got Talent?

Once a month, Footsteps to the Future sponsors special events in Lee and Collier counties where our young women, mentors and volunteers come together to share a meal and participate in various life-skills training activities. Over the years, we’ve visited local banks to learn how to open a bank account and access online banking. We’ve gone to the Career Center in Ft. Myers, where our young women received job assessments and personal contacts with employment counselors. As guests of Health Park Hospital, the girls were introduced to the different types of jobs available in healthcare, including their education requirements and pay scales.

Last month our Ft. Myers group had a memorable experience when they met with Shawn Holiday, a teacher, writer and “improv guru,” who presented an awesome interactive session. Shawn also is a producer and director of children’s theatrical programs, live comedy shows, radio and television broadcasts, and a variety of concerts and events. During our Footsteps meeting, he used his magic to teach such valuable skills as responsibility, teamwork, coordination, poise, diction, communication, creativity, problem-solving, and making adjustments to life. Everyone participated and came away with all sorts of new talents and ideas.

There was so much enthusiasm at the end of the meeting, it was decided that the young women of Footsteps, under Shawn’s tutelage of Holiday, will create their own version of So, You think You got Talent? to showcase their multi-talented selves and let people know about them. Stay tuned for more information about this exciting production!
